Transcontinental and Sacramento Valley
railroads began in Old Sacramento. The 100,000-square-foot museum is the
finest and most visited of its kind in North America, displaying 21 restored
locomotives and cars, 1,000 fantastic toy trains, all-new exhibits
highlighting the human face of the railroad and the "Lost Spike". Daily
10AM-5PM Adults $8, youths ages 6-17 $3, ages 5 and under are free. Large
museum store located inside museum lobby. Same-ticket admittance to Central
Pacific Passenger Station (see listing under "Family Activities"). Six-mile
round-trip steam train rides operate weekends Apr-Sept. from the Central

A reconstruction of California's first public
theater, originally opened in October 1849. A unit of the California State
Railroad Museum, free to school groups and visitors, featuring docent-led
programs on Sacramento history. Open Mon.-Thurs. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. School groups
welcome with reservation. (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.)

The Aerospace Museum of California features the
new 37,500 sq ft Hardie Setzer Pavillion and air park with over 35 aircraft,
educational and interactive exhibits, education and center and expanded gift

The Crocker Art Museum, with its collection
spanning from 15th century to contemporary periods, is the oldest continually
operating public art museum in the West and is considered to be the finest
example of Victorian Italianate architecture in the United States. Public

This building housed the western terminus of
the Pony Express, the original California State Supreme Court, Theodore
Judah’s office and various commercial activities. Today it houses the Wells
Fargo History Museum and the Sacramento Visitors Center. Open daily 10 a.m.-5

In April 1860, 80 riders completed the
1,966-mile run on horseback to St. Joseph, Mo., in 10 days or less. In October
1861, the completion of Western Union's transcontinental telegraph put the "Express"
