Chicago Tourist AttractionsAdler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum The Adler Planetarium is located on Lake Shore Drive at Chicago's Museum Campus. Opened in 1930 as the first planetarium in the western hemisphere, the Adler fuels the imagination of its visitors with all new exhibits, state-of-the-art computer technology and the world's first StarRider Theater, while showcasing a renowned collection of historical astronomy artifacts. Amazing Chicago Funhouse Maze Amazing Chicago Funhouse Maze, located on Navy Pier, is Chicago's first full-sensory maze experience. This 15-minute walk-through attraction amazes, as you navigate through a series of mirror mazes and tunnels set in a twisted Chicago Landscape. Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo, located in Brookfield, Illinois, just west of Chicago, is open every day of the year. The Zoo is located on 216 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, featuring over 2,000 animals. The Zoo first opened in 1934 and became world renowned for its use of natural barriers, such as moats, rather than cages. Brookfield Zoo featured the first Giant Panda exhibit in the United States. Buckingham Fountain The Buckingham Fountain, located in Grant Park, is one of Chicago's most popular attractions and one of the largest fountains in the world. It was opened in May of 1927. The four sea horses you see on its sides represent the four states that touch Lake Michigan: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Chicago Cultural Center The Chicago Cultural Center was completed in 1897 and dedicated as the city's original Chicago Public Library. The building's structure consists of three-foot thick masonry walls faced with Bedford limestone that are set 104 feet above a granite base. Sumptuous materials used in the interior design include rare imported marble, fine hardwood, stained-glass, and polished brass, as well as mosaics of Favrile glass, colored stone and mother-of-pearl. Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio More than one hundred years ago, Frank Lloyd Wright sparked an architectural revolution with the opening of his Oak Park studio. The Home and Studio is one of two museum sites maintained by The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust. Lincoln Park Zoo A premier Chicago attraction, Lincoln Park Zoo each year welcomes more than three million visitors, providing them with remarkable educational experiences as well as fun and enjoyment. Lincoln Park Zoo stands as one of the last free major cultural institutions in the United States and the only one left in Chicago. The Zoo is open 365 days a year. Magnificent Mile Magnificent Mile is the name given to the stretch along Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street. The Magnificent Mile offers over 3.1 million square feet of retail space, 460 stores, 275 restaurants, 51 hotels, 2 unique museums and a variety of sightseeing and entertainment attractions to more than 22 million visitors each year. Millennium Park First planned in 1997 as a way to create new parkland in Grant Park and transform unsightly railroad tracks and parking lots, Millennium Park has evolved into the most significant millennium project in the world. And the reviews are already in. "Millennium Park" says one prominent civic leader, "will be a worthy creation for all time. It will define Chicago to the entire world as America’s greatest city." Navy Pier Navy Pier has been a Chicago landmark since it first opened in 1916. Originally designed as both a shipping and recreational facility, the Pier also served as a military training site during two world wars, a venue for concerts and exhibitions, and the temporary home for a once-fledgling University of Illinois’ Chicago campus. Today, Navy Pier showcases a unique collection of restaurants and shops in addition to unequaled recreational and exhibition facilities. Northwestern Station Built to replace the former Chicago and North Western Station demolished in 1984, North Western was designed by Helmut Jahn, who also designed the United Terminal at O'Hare International Airport and the James R. Thompson Center. It one of the two major rail hubs in downtown Chicago along with Union Station which site across the street form its location. |
