Greater Boston

Catch a performance or a movie at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the banks of the Charles River. Or head to a different waterfront venue, the Bank of America Pavilion on Boston Harbor for some of the area's best and biggest shows.

The Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Boston, is an outdoor museum founded in 1872 with extensive collections of woody plants, trees, lilacs, and flowers from around the world. Manicured grounds provide the perfect setting for picnics, walks, or biking along the paved walkways. Boston Public Garden, established in 1837, was the first public botanical garden in the United States. Cambridge

America's oldest college (1636); alumni include seven US Presidents: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, John F. Kennedy, and George W. Bush; student-led walking tours; art, ethnological, and natural history museums.

The unique open-air Publick Theatre is located on a man-made island in Herter Park near Harvard University. This classical outdoor theater includes the Mainstage, the Shakespeare Workshop, and the Young Company.

Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge is a national historic landmark founded in 1831. Plant species from around the world include Victorian-era plantings, contemporary gardens, and 5,000 trees. Famous residents include architect Charles Bullfinch, artist Winslow Homer and authors Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

North of Boston

The Fisherman's Memorial Statue in Gloucester pays homage to the maritime history of Gloucester and Cape Ann.

At Long Hill, the Sedgwick Garden in Beverly, gardens are divided into different "rooms" separating five spectacular acres of cultivated grounds. You'll find rare and unusual plant species and a variety of trees and shrubs. This former summer home of author Ellery Sedgwick and his wife, horticulturist Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, is flanked by sweeping woodlands and robust orchards.

Maudslay Art Center, located in the Maudslay State Park, features pop, classical, folk, country, swing, and big band concerts set in a natural open-air theater.

Greater Merrimack Valley

In August, outdoor concerts return to the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln where music and art harmonize over the center's 35 acres. Admission includes Sculpture Park exhibits, box dinner, and a concert under the stars.

Explore nature at Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, run by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Dig in at the Learning Garden to learn tips about growing vegetables. Plenty of wildlife adorns three miles of walking trails.

Bristol County

Concerts prevail at the 19,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, the Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts in Mansfield. Both covered and lawn seating are available to see top-name performers. Summer 2007 performers include: Dave Matthews Band, Rascal Flatts, and Nickelback.

Plymouth County

Plymouth Rock in Plymouth symbolizes the landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620.

South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset and their sister venue The Cape Cod Melody Tent, has featured world-class entertainment, music, variety, and comedy, an intimate tented theatre-in-the-round, since 1932. Stars that will grace the stage in 2007 are Trisha Yearwood, Aretha Franklin, Liza Minnelli, and Kenny G.

Cape Cod

Cape-wide, the concerts at local town bandstands and gazebos saturate the salt air with melodic sounds or community bands. For larger performances, visit The Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis which showcases world-class music, variety, and comedy performances in a tented theater-in-the-round. Sister venue to South Shore Music Circus, it features 2007 performers Los Lonely Boys, ABBA, and Linda Ronstadt.

Martha's Vineyard

The beautiful grounds of the Featherstone Center for the Arts, tucked away behind rolling hills in Oak Bluffs, offers Musical Mondays featuring Zydeco and Jazz performances.

Nantucket

There's music island wide including free band concerts Thursday and Sunday evenings at Children's Beach and Tuesdays events sponsored by the Nantucket Musical Arts Society. Don't miss the Noonday Concert series every Thursday, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church on Orange Street.

Central Massachusetts

Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra of Worcester, established 1951, performs free at the Institute Park and the East Park Summer Family Concerts, sponsored by Bank of America. Performances are also held at Mechanics Hall in downtown Worcester.

Greater Springfield

West Springfield Summer Concert Series performs free on the Storrowton Village Green on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition. Enjoy a variety of entertainment from polka to swing quartets.
